For a long time, I thought I was the only homeowner going through the nightmare of property damage caused by a next-door developer. Cracked walls, a party wall that seems to be falling apart, and endless battles with the NYC Buildings (DOB) – it felt isolating. I kept thinking no one could possibly understand what this experience is like.
Then I came across the story of Elgin Elias, a Brooklyn homeowner and immigrant, whose house suffered devastating damage from adjacent construction. Watching her point out the same types of wall cracks I have in my own home was a wake-up call: I’m not alone.
Sadly, I believe Ms. Elias has passed, but her story continues to resonate. Her courage to speak up, despite the obstacles, mirrors almost exactly what I’ve been through. It reminds me that while this fight can feel isolating, there is a shared experience among those of us dealing with ruthless developers and the challenges of protecting our homes.
